Around Chez Bogart, you know that we test out a lot of doggie products – I always give my honest opinion, and I just LOVE to get packages – but despite sharing my home with 4 kitties I don’t often get them involved in the testing.  Today that will change as we’ve received a Sunny Seat to try.

Now.  We don’t normally do the “as seen on TV” stuff no matter how intriguing they may be.  Firstly because Kafka (the short-haired orange tabby) won’t let us get the remote, but also because we don’t have cable, damnit.  And our antenna is one step above rabbit ears, so basically we never really see the stuff.  And at first look, we didn’t have much hope that this would be all that great.

Sure, mama thought, there is no way this can hold even one cat, much less 50 pounds worth.  The pieces looked uninspiring.

But it was indeed really easy to assemble – taking the 5 minutes that the box said it would.  Whew!

After assembly, we attached it to our window with the big suction cups.  Hm.  It’s staying.  We were pretty sure this was the moment it would fail, that the suction cups wouldn’t do their job, and that it would fall off of the window sadly in a heap of plastic.  But we were wrong.

How best to test?  With our un-shy-est cat, Kafka.

Kafka is a sound 15-pounder.  He’s not afraid of much, and once promised some chicken liver treats in exchange for posing for photos, was completely on board with our testing.

This holds!  It does what it says it does!  Thumbs up (is this the part where the chicken liver treats come out?)

After the initial testing phase, Kafka took over the seat as his own.  We even caught him napping in it.  No sign of it coming off of the window.  As we said earlier, we thought that this wasn’t going to work but this window seat really performed!  No tools needed, nothing that has to be screwed into walls, this just sticks on a window.  For us, it’s big enough for one kitty, so we can’t speak as to the holds-50-pounds-of-kitty claim, but it really does hold and Kafka seems quite content in it.  AWESOME!

As you may already know, I am always pleased when packages arrive with my name on them.  You want an opinion?  YOU GOT IT

Today a box of treats arrived from the fine folks at Barksters.  But these weren’t treats like anything I’ve ever seen before – they’re “krisps”, mama says that they have the texture of Munchos (all of the gourmet humans with fine, exotic taste will understand this).  They’re all-natural, wheat-free, glute-free, low in fat (take note pups who have been told they need to shed some poundage – get your humans to buy these!), and made in the good ol’ US of A.

I got a brown rice and chicken package and a sweet potato and beef one.  I made my choice of which to try first…

And then tried to open the damn thing myself.

If the beef one won’t open, try the chicken one, I thought to myself as I used my mighty paws to destroy the packaging.

So here is a closeup of the texture – they’re light and crispy as opposed to the crunch of a traditional dog biscuit.  Different, indeed.  This is the very last thing that this particular Barkster will ever see…

They come in a plain inside bag that doesn’t look that interesting…

Until you get your whole nose inside.  Then… INTERESTING

The bag is well-sized for the mighty Airedale nose.  Some of you with smaller schnozolas may encounter more difficulty getting into the bag.  For you I suggest grabbing it, and shaking violently from side to side – a Barkster snowstorm!

At first I wasn’t sure – that texture sure was something I had never experienced before – but after a few tries I was convinced.  Thanks Barksters!

Ok, stop looking at it – MAMA OPEN THE DAMN BAG OR I SHALL BE FORCED TO OPEN IT MYSELF

Goodies!  Goodies!  Goodies!

The kind folks at Cesar dog foods sent over a care package chock full ‘o goodness for me to sample.  Dog food, dog treats, and yeah some silly t-shirt for the humans.  GIMME THAT!

Yeah, yeah t-shirt, yada yada yada.  These smell awfully darned good…

Anything with the word Treats on it is fine in my book.  These are really cute, a sweet mixture of shapes and flavors.  Semi-soft for those times when crunchy just won’t do.

Not just one bag was inside but two – making me believe that a dog was responsible for sending out this package.  A human might put in one little bag of treats, but a fellow dog KNOWS that ONE IS NEVER ENOUGH.

But this is what I’ve set my sights – uh, paws – on.  I could smell these through the box.  And I generally don’t care for cans of dog food – mama makes my dinner in the crockpot each night (when she’s not breaking them, that is) – but this is INTOXICATING.

All different flavors – this one is filet mignon – yeah JUST OPEN THE DAMN THING MAMA!

Hm.  I don’t think that even when I was a puppy I was a particularly small dog.  Maybe compared to now.  But it’s a cute t-shirt.  Kinda looks Westie-ish to me (woo-hoo fellow terriers!).

I have to say that mama wasn’t expecting this – I generally turn up my substantial nose at store-bought dog food.  I suppose I’m a bit of a foodie (i.e. snob) about what I eat – a boy does get spoiled when he has a home-cooked meal every night after all.  But I went NUTSO for these and while one may be a satisfying meal for a little dog, 5 might be more like it for a mighty Dale of my impressive stature.

And a side benefit?  Guess who cleaned out the containers for easy recycling?  Thanks Behemoth!

This Cesar dog food gets a mighty 8 paws up (4 canine, 4 feline).  Every single flavor was gobbled.  I took the majority while my feline friend did the back-up work.  HAIL CESAR!

The kind folks at Cesar sent us two of these lovely bags-of-goodness and I’d love to share one with one of my blog readers!  The kit had a whole bunch ‘o Cesar wet foods, two – count ‘em, two! – bags of semi-soft treats, and a purple Small Dog, Big Love t-shirt.  Mama also wants to pass along the hot pink Small Dog, Big Love t-shirt as well, I’m not a small dog.  So rather than make this difficult, how about two folks who leave a comment on this blog including the words “ET TU, BRUTE?”, add something amusing of their own, and provide their email address get one?  Before next Wednesday (August 10)?

The lovely folks at Pets and Beyond sent us a new Drinkwell fountain to try out.  Aha, that explains it!

It has been some time since I had the privilege to drink from a Drinkwell.  I love ‘em, the kitties love ‘em, but apparently in the past they have been a bit, well, of a pain in the butt to keep clean.  Mama mentioned something about my fine beard as being an all-purpose crap catcher… and since the kitties all lose fur in a puff whenever they move a muscle (which isn’t that much, thank goodness, wouldn’t want bald kitties), well, lets just say that keeping the Drinkwell clean was a real challenge for my cleanliness-challenged mama.

Behemoth wanted to try it out first, but I really had to insist that I get to do it.  So he ridiculously gracefully moved over to the cat food bowl – pretending that HE MEANT TO DO THAT.  That’s fine with me Behemoth, as long as I get first dibs on the new Drinkwell!

This is the Drinkwell Platinum.  It’s much more compact that the previous Drinkwell fountains I have had, which mama says bodes really well for the keeping-it-clean issue.  The back pitcher where the water is kept is easy to remove and easy to fill without as much spillage as the old ones did.  Don’t ask how she manages to spill kind of everything, she’s just very talented in her own way.

So this is me taking my first sips from the new Drinkwell.  It looks small compared to my big manly, muscle-y manliness, but honestly it’s really a great size for us all.  I can get the full beard in, and the kitties can slurp easily.  Win-win!

Yes sure, there’s a bit more spillage when I drink than when the kitties delicately lap up the water, but hey, I’M A DOG

Refreshing.  Cool.  AWESOME.

The free-flowing water is just dandy.  I enjoy drinking from the waterfall as well as dipping in for a good slurp in the pool.

There isn’t much that’s better than a Drinkwell.  Drinking from the hose is awesome, taking a couple of slurps while swimming is cool, but a Drinkwell has the added benefit of being able to do it inside, and all the time.  Do not underestimate the convenience.  Getting the humans to pull out the hose or take you to the pool, lake, or what-have-you takes up valuable cuteness, energy, and time.  Why not just have it ready to go in your kitchen?

Really, there are only two choices.  You can have the most amazing dad in the world like I did, who set up this in my favorite back yard in the world in Mareike-land a few years ago:

Yeah that’s right.  MY OWN DRINKING TOILET.  This is the ultimate for ANY dog.

But we are not all lucky enough to have such intelligent humans with crazy ideas and mad skills to make them come true.  So really, a Drinkwell is truly the very-next-best-thing.  And highly recommended by all four of my furry kitty friends, so it’s bi-species-al!

The 40-pound bag arrived to much fanfare here at Chez Bogart.  Both Bogart and the cats were absolutely FASCINATED by the box.  Sniff sniff sniff, scratch scratch scratch.  I was just tired from dragging the large package up 3 flights of stairs, and they used my tired-ness to their advantage – while Bogart’s mighty front paws held the box down, Kafka and Willie (the two orange tubby tabbies) began chewing on the box.  I’m sure they would have gotten inside if they had had more time – but it was time for the creature with the opposable thumbs to step in and open the box.

Eukanuba Natural Lamb & Rice for Large Breeds – this is right up Bogart’s alley!  The bag design looks fantastic – I think it sends a message of serious nutrition – and Bogart thinks it sends a message of DELICIOUSNESS.  It’s not often that he whines when food is involved, he is not a fan of most commercially-made dog food, but this caught his attention.  Gingerly I ripped open a corner of the bag so that he could sample his new food… but then that mighty paw came out of nowhere, ripping open a much larger hole (easy access, I’m sure he was thinking).  Pieces scattered all over the kitchen floor.  But then, like a game of connect-the-dots, they were gone.  Bogart had hoovered up every one.  Fantastic for me – no cleanup! – but I was also so happy that he likes the food!

Bogart gets homemade food supplemented with occasional kibble.  Chicken or turkey soup with vegetables and rice, made in his very own slow cooker.  I am particular about what I feed him, and always nervous about food recalls and contamination.  We have never tried Eukanuba food before (I don’t know why, I think we’ve tried almost every food in the pet store at one point or another).  It looks good, it smells good, there isn’t a lot of crap in it, and most importantly, my super-finicky-used-to-having-everything-homemade dog LIKES it.

So Bogart will be embarking (pun intended) on the 28-day challenge.  A little something crunchy to go with his daily soup (croutons, anyone?).

In Oklahoma, a man surrendered 3 Airedales to rescue (I’m going to give him a teensy tiny bit of credit for at least surrendering and not dumping them into a shelter).  The two lovely females are both heavily pregnant, and the male is the daddy.  It appears that these dogs have been used as puppy-making machines based on the history of the man.  The three dogs have lived their lives in a filthy outdoor kennel and have had litter after litter of puppies. They have no social skills and are petrified right now.

This lovely girl-Dale-mama is Pearl:

Pearl is 7, and she is also Lily’s mama.  Isn’t she gorgeous?  She’s just about to have her fine Dale babies.  No puppies for Pearl yet, but she is heartworm negative (yes!), both ears are infected, she has whipworms, and is in need of a dental.

And this pretty girl-Dale-mama is Lily:

Lily is 5, and is one of Pearl’s babies.  She is due to have her pups at the end of February.

This is Crockett, super-Dale-dad.

Poor guy, must be scared out of his mind.  And then a bath?  Geez…  Crockett is a beautiful boy, and the father of both girl-Dales litters.

Recently we had the opportunity to try out a new collar from DogCollarsBoutique.com – and boy do they have a huge selection of cool collars for the stylish pup.  I rarely wear a collar, I’m more of a harness guy, so rather than trying out some new bling, I opted for a new harness.

My new harness is similar to the one I wear everyday, except that it’s black and from Timberwolf (my old one is a Petco special).  I’m liking it already.

And it’s so tasty too!

I decided to give it a try-out on a long walkie today in Rittenhouse Square park.  It’s a crisp autumn day with lots of people and doggies out, so I could do a little modeling.

I really like that it’s black – you can barely see it in these photos and it’s the same in real life – so there is more of this handsome Airedale to see.  Win-Win!

It fits me well and is completely adjustable.  It doesn’t rub me anywhere it shouldn’t, and I think it enhances my masculine-ness.

See?  Functional AND fashionable.  Mama was originally a little skeptical because this harness was softer than my old one (she thought it might not be able to handle what I can dish out), but apparently it can take a good Aire-pulling and the hardware lays really well on my muscle-y chest.  She’s sold on it now too!

All of this Airedmiration can be tiring for a boy.  Thanks again DogCollarsBoutique!  I absolutely LOVE my new harness!!!

We went with the Large and mama is very pleased with the way it fits!  I don’t have any issues putting things on over my head, and then it just clips on both sides of my shoulders.  A snap to put on.  The thing that mama liked about it the most was that this vest works with just water – there is no freezing of inserts and no possibility of anything hurting me – and after the initial soaking you can reactivate the cooling powers by just pouring more water over it.  Perfect.

And yes, it seems to work!  This covered my entire back – which, being black fuzz, gets very hot in the sun – and the coolness of the vest keeps my skin cool.  Most importantly to me, this vest doesn’t limit my ability to do some of my favorite things, like trampling plants…

And of course, peeing.

The vest is from Ruff Wear – it’s their Swamp Cooler vest.  It works well with my deep, manly, muscle-y chest, is easy to use, and most importantly, IT WORKS.  I was definitely more comfortable in the 90+ degree heat with this on, and during our hour-long walk mama poured a cup of water over me two times for added refreshment (it’s SO GREAT to not have her pour water directly on me).

And see?  It’s actually quite dashing on me.  And I can wear my favorite harness over it.

Of course we still take it easy on our walkies – mama still has that broken toe and it is going to be 90+ for the next few days – but now I don’t feel the need to plop down in the middle of the walkie because I’m too hot.  I can go back to plopping down for more important things…

Like eating sticks, of course.

Luckily, just as mama was about to give up, this appeared courtesy of Kafka (yes, it’s cat puke):

And he was kind enough to “produce” on the off-white carpeting that covers our place.  Purrfect.  So we first cleaned up the “extra” bits per the instructions, and then soaked the new stain:

After waiting for about 15 minutes, most of the stain was gone, with no scrubbing:

After another round:

The stain was almost completely gone.  And mama can confirm that the smell was gone as well.

At the get-go, we weren’t expecting much.  Mama has tried almost every product out there that claims to get rid of pet-related stains.  We were really pleasantly surprised.

This product worked really well on fresh stains – it was a bit more challenged by older ones (yes, we have a few of those around as well).  It definitely faded them (even one that wasn’t pet-related) and didn’t do any damage to the rug itself which was great.  The can itself is large but empties rather quickly (after soaking the one new stain 2x and trying out 5 smaller older stains), but maybe mama soaked them more than necessary – if you have a lot of stains to remove, definitely get more than one can.  I’d say that this was a really tough test for this product, as our carpet is both lightly colored and fuzzy and therefore difficult to clean (I can hear mama whining about it now), and it performed well and as advertised.

The bottom line is that Clean + Green is a definite Buy Me product, super to have around for “accidents” – especially ones that you find quickly.  It’s completely safe and non-toxic for pets (a BIG plus), and I saw some at my local pet store the last time I was there.  Take a look for yourself at their website, you can buy online too!

• Destiny, 11, lives in La Vergne, Tenn.  Destiny and her dog, Salsa, immediately fell in love with each other during Canine Assistants’ training camp in November.  Suffering from a rare form of epilepsy, Destiny has constant low-level seizures around the clock.  Will Salsa have the ability to alert Destiny of impending seizures, providing comfort not just to Destiny, but to her family?  Her parents are hoping to offer their daughter a measure of freedom she has never before experienced.
• Twins, Chase & Connor, 7, live in Largo, Fla. The twins both have a form of cerebral palsy known as spastic diplegia, which affects the muscles of the lower body. Both boys hope their Canine Assistants dogs will help with everyday tasks and be companions.  But will Chase realize his dream of one day walking with the support of his dog Oakley?

Through a Dog’s Eyes also follows the drama as recipients are matched with their canine companions and as they learn how to work with their new partners. It’s an inspiring family journey. Arnold describes her teaching methods and discusses the life-changing impact these dogs have on recipients. In addition, the world’s foremost dog expert, Dr. Ádám Miklósi, head of the Department of Ethology at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary, and founder of the Family Dog Research Project, takes a role in Through a Dog’s Eyes by analyzing the organization’s training methods and discussing how science supports the training philosophy.

Now I am a man who takes his poop seriously.  While I am happy to leave it behind (hey, I’m done with it), mama always carries enough poopie bags and we adhere to the NO POOP LEFT BEHIND doctrine.

However… I hate to rain on the parade of the folks who spent some time, brain cells, and a little cash to print up these little ditties, but…

An awful lot of the poop in this area DOESN’T COME FROM DOGS if you know what I mean.  So I left them a message about it.

Paw to the head.  Works like a charm.

Got mama to stop talking almost immediately.  Of course it doesn’t hurt that my mighty paw is almost the size of her entire face.

And if they try to move the mighty paw?  Well, you can play that game too.  Just dig in your toes so that they don’t want to move for fear of their eyes.  Trust me, they like their eyes too much to move.

Be sure to keep your paw there for awhile – so that they LEARN when it is ok to yap and when it isn’t.  No bark collar required!
